The real problem

Most tanning gummies do not contain what their labels claim.

This is not a rumor. It is a predictable consequence of how gummies are manufactured and how astaxanthin behaves under that process.

The chemistry is fragile.

Astaxanthin is a lipophilic xanthophyll carotenoid extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater microalgae. Its biological activity lives in the all-trans isomer configuration. Exposure to heat, oxygen, light, or moisture isomerizes it to less-active cis forms and oxidizes the conjugated polyene chain entirely.

Gummy manufacturing destroys it.

Conventional gummy production extrudes pectin or gelatin at 80 to 95°C, mixes under atmospheric oxygen, and depends on long shelf exposure to light. Every one of those conditions degrades astaxanthin. Independent HPLC potency testing on commercial carotenoid gummies routinely finds 30 to 70 percent below label claim by the time a bottle reaches a customer.

The industry hides behind blends.

Most tanning gummies list a "carotenoid complex" or "glow blend" without per-ingredient milligram disclosure. This is not a formulation choice, it is a shield against having to prove the dose. If a supplement will not tell you how much of the active it contains, assume the answer is: less than it used to, and less than the research requires.

Bioavailability is the other half.

Even intact astaxanthin does not absorb well on its own. It is fat-soluble and requires a lipid carrier to cross the intestinal mucosa into circulation. Published absorption studies show lipid-formulated astaxanthin delivering roughly 2 to 3 times the plasma concentration of aqueous or crystalline forms at the same label dose. A gummy that does not address delivery is losing potency twice: once to processing, and once to your gut.

Why the claim deserves caution

The label math does not fit a 6 g gummy.

Hitting 12.7 mg astaxanthin and 30.9 mg lycopene from standard 5%/10% oleoresins requires roughly 650 to 700 mg of carotenoid extract per gummy, more than 10% of the serving mass, before binders, sugar, pectin, flavor, or oil. Stacked with 84.4 mg of vitamin E (tocopherol oil) on top of those oleoresins, holding all that in a 6 g pectin gummy without seepage is a problem most contract manufacturers do not invisibly solve. And no COA is published to confirm the label, with no disclosed astaxanthin source.
