The orange problem
Beta carotene is the most widely used pigmenting carotenoid in tanning gummies for two reasons: it's cheap (bulk-synthesized and dirt-common in supplement manufacturing), and it's extremely visible (the orange carrot pigment, exactly that hue, deposited in your skin).
That visibility is the trap. At dietary levels (a bowl of carrots a day), beta carotene contributes to a gentle warm tone alongside other carotenoids. At supplement doses (25-50 mg+ in many tanning gummies), it overwhelms the system and produces a distinctly yellow-orange cast that reads as cosmetic, not natural.
Carotenoderma, explained
The clinical name for the orange discoloration is carotenoderma. It's a harmless but visually obvious condition caused by excess beta carotene accumulating in skin, particularly in regions with thick stratum corneum.
The first places it shows:
- Palms and soles (thick keratin layer, high carotene concentration)
- Nasolabial folds and forehead
- The whites of your eyes if intake is high enough
It fades when you stop supplementing, but by then the damage is social. Most beta carotene tanning-gummy reviews eventually feature a photo of an orange palm.
"I tried [competitor] for four weeks. My skin tone didn't really change but my palms turned the color of a Cheeto." This is the anti-goal. ChUV exists because this shouldn't be the default.
The smoker study risk
There's a deeper reason we exclude beta carotene. Two large trials, the ATBC study (1994) and the CARET trial (1996), found that supplemental beta carotene actually increased lung cancer incidence in current and former heavy smokers. The finding surprised researchers at the time and permanently changed how beta carotene supplementation is recommended.
We don't know who's going to take our product. Some portion of our customers are current or former smokers. The risk profile of beta carotene in that subgroup, combined with the cosmetic downside for everyone else, makes it a non-starter for us regardless of cost.
What we use instead
ChUV tanning gummies are built around astaxanthin and lycopene. Both are non-pro-vitamin-A carotenoids, which means:
- They do not trigger the beta-carotene smoker-risk pathway
- They do not cluster pigment into the orange-yellow corner at supplement doses
- They produce a balanced warm tone that reads as natural sun exposure, not cosmetic
Tanning gummies without orange
If you searched for tanning gummies without orange, you are looking at the whole reason ChUV exists. The orange cast that plagues most tanning gummies is not a brand problem or a dose problem, it is a beta carotene problem. Strip the beta carotene, replace it with astaxanthin and lycopene at clinical doses, and the orange goes away. The warm tone stays.
That is the short answer. The longer one: astaxanthin deposits a red-copper pigment, lycopene adds balancing red, and neither accumulates in thick-keratin zones the way beta carotene does. The result on skin reads as sun-warmed tan, not carrot palms.
