Tanning gummies vs tanning beds.

Tanning beds work by damaging your skin. That's not a framing, it's the mechanism. If that trade-off is harder to accept than it used to be, tanning gummies are the alternative a lot of people are switching to.

Mechanism: UV damage response vs pigment accumulation

Tanning beds emit UVA and (in some units) UVB radiation. UV exposure causes DNA damage in keratinocytes, which triggers a repair-and-defense response. Part of that response is melanogenesis: melanocytes produce melanin pigment, which is deposited in neighboring skin cells. Melanin is your body's way of trying to absorb future UV before it damages more DNA.

In plain English: your tan is a scar response. The darker the tan, the more damage the skin has already absorbed.

Tanning gummies bypass UV entirely. Carotenoid pigments (astaxanthin, lycopene) are absorbed through the gut, transported by lipoproteins, and deposited in skin tissue. No UV exposure, no DNA damage, no melanogenesis. The warmth comes from the reflective properties of the carotenoids themselves.

Key distinction:

A tanning bed makes your skin react to damage by producing pigment. A tanning gummy is the pigment, delivered without the damage step.

Health risk profile

The World Health Organization's IARC classifies UV tanning devices as Group 1 carcinogens (known human carcinogens), the same category as tobacco and asbestos. This is not a marketing statement; it's the literal regulatory classification.

The documented risks of indoor tanning:

  • Elevated risk of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma
  • Accelerated photoaging (wrinkles, pigment changes, loss of elasticity)
  • Eye damage (cataracts, ocular melanoma) without proper protection

The risk scales with frequency and total lifetime exposure. Starting indoor tanning before age 35 is associated with a significantly higher melanoma risk in particular.

Carotenoid supplementation has a comparatively benign risk profile. Astaxanthin and lycopene have been used in human trials at clinical doses with minimal adverse events reported (see our astaxanthin pillar).

How each looks

  • Tanning beds: can produce dramatic, brown-based color, especially with UVB exposure. Depth is the selling point. Downside: uneven if the session is cut short, and the "leathered" look shows up over time with repeated use.
  • Tanning gummies: produce a lighter, warmer, more golden tone. Not capable of the same contrast as a bed. The color reads as "just came back from a healthy vacation," not "just came back from a tanning competition."

Cost over time

  • Monthly tanning bed pass: typically $20-$60 per month at chain salons. $240-$720 per year. Unlimited-but-used weekly adds up fast.

The honest take
